SAFE PASSAGE

We have a right to be safe.

With so many DC students traveling outside of our communities to go to school, making sure we are safe on our way to and from school should be the city’s top priority.  During the school year 2019-2020, Pathways 2 Power leaders partnered with students across the city to develop solutions that center student’s experience and give them a seat at the decision making table. From these conversations, several initiatives were developed and are in the process of being implemented.

  • Safe Spots- specific businesses and organizations along commonly traveled routes to school that will open their doors as a place of safety in an emergency

  • Increase in credible messengers and violence interruption programs.  It is important that people from the community are involved in keeping the community safe

  • LiveSafe Mobile App- a tool to more easily send emergency alerts, share walking or riding status with others and flag concerns for other students through a shared map.

For other solutions our leaders camp up with, check out the full list here.

[REPORT] A student’s perspective

In 2020, the Office of the Student Advocate (OSA) administered surveys and conducted focus groups with students to better understand their experiences traveling to and from school.

If your safety was being threatened when you were walking to work, or inside of work, you would do something to make sure you would be safe. And that’s what we’re doing.
