LIMESTONE OF LOST LEGACIES

Limestone of Lost Legacies is a mural project to memorialize five teens who lost their lives to gun violence in 2017 and 2018 in the District of Columbia. The mural aims to create a space of remembrance and healing for the families who grieve forever.

We created a magazine that tells a portion of each of the stories of the individuals on the mural. In addition, we’ve just published a curriculum workbook that uses these stories, and the mural itself, as a way to teach about the impact of gun violence in our community. Both are downloadable below:

Pathways 2 Power leaders are available to facilitate a conversation using the mural as a learning tool. Please reach out through our email if you are interested in hosting a facilitated conversation in your classroom, office or community organization.

E.L Haynes Public Charter School Lesson (November 2020)

In November, P2P leaders met with student leaders at E.L Haynes Public Charter School in the class Movement for Black Lives 2020: The Long History of the Black Freedom Struggle. We facilitated a lesson that uses the mural as a tool to talk about turning grief into power. E.L Haynes has also lost a student to gun violence and has felt the pain of losing a classmate.

Here are some of the things the 10 students who we talked with had to say:

67% of students either agreed or strongly agreed that your presentation gave them at least one idea about what to do for their action research projects

79% of students either agreed or strongly agreed that your presentation helped them better understand action research

90% of students either agreed or strongly agreed that your presentation was interesting and engaging90% of students either agreed or strongly agreed that your presentation was interesting and engaging

They were so confident and made sure they knew we understood what they were presenting.
What they are doing is good and they should continue to get other young people to join!
They did a great job presenting and sharing details!
I like how they didn’t let gun violence lead them down the wrong path, they stayed the course and made a difference in a good and inspiring way.
I hope they keep doing what they´re doing because what they´re doing creates a positive impact.
